Syngonium sp. ‘Lance Leaf’

Syngonium sp. ‘Lance Leaf’ is an unusual collector Syngonium distinguished by its exceptionally long, narrow, lance-shaped foliage—dramatically different from the familiar arrowhead-shaped leaves associated with most commonly cultivated Syngoniums.

The elongated leaves mature to a rich deep green, with attractive lighter green to yellow-green reticulation visible across the blade. Given vertical support, the plant develops into an elegant climber with increasingly substantial foliage while retaining its characteristic narrow form.

Interestingly, the precise species identity of ‘Lance Leaf’ remains unresolved. It circulates among collectors as Syngonium sp. ‘Lance Leaf’, and specialist growers have been unable to confidently assign it to a formally described species. The “sp.” designation simply indicates an unidentified species within the genus rather than forcing an unsupported botanical identification.

Like other members of the genus, ‘Lance Leaf’ is a tropical climbing aroid. A moss pole, plank, or other vertical support allows it to develop its natural growth habit, while warm temperatures, good humidity, bright filtered light, and an airy aroid substrate encourage vigorous growth.

This is one of my personal favorite Syngoniums. Its narrow, almost strap-like foliage looks nothing like the typical arrowhead Syngonium, and a mature climbing specimen is remarkably elegant. Despite its distinctive appearance, it remains surprisingly uncommon in collections and is an easy, rewarding plant to grow.

An excellent choice for anyone who appreciates unusual species and forms rather than simply chasing variegation.
