Monstera gracilis

Monstera gracilis is an unusual and relatively uncommon species Monstera native to tropical South America, with a natural range extending from southern Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador into northern Peru.

Unlike the massive proportions associated with some of the better-known Monsteras, M. gracilis has a more delicate growth habit, with slender climbing stems and comparatively thin foliage. As the plant matures, the leaves become increasingly divided, developing a graceful pinnatifid form and sometimes small perforations near the midrib.

In its natural habitat, M. gracilis grows as a climbing hemiepiphytic aroid in wet tropical forest. Interestingly, botanical observations suggest that it is not necessarily a high climber; plants have been observed climbing for a relatively short distance before producing stolon-like growth that returns toward the forest floor.

This is an excellent species for the collector interested in true botanical Monsteras beyond the commonly cultivated varieties. Given a vertical support, warm temperatures, good humidity, bright filtered light and an airy aroid substrate, its increasingly mature foliage becomes the real attraction.
