Rhapidophora tetrasperma — “Mini Monstera”

Rhapidophora tetrasperma is a fast-growing climbing aroid prized for its compact, deeply divided foliage. It is commonly sold as “Mini Monstera” because its mature leaves resemble a miniature version of Monstera deliciosa, but despite the nickname, it is not a Monstera. Rhapidophora and Monstera are separate genera within the aroid family, Araceae.

Old World vs. New World Aroids

One of the easiest ways to understand the distinction is geography. Rhapidophora is an Old World genus, native to tropical regions of Africa and Asia; R. tetrasperma itself is native to southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. “Old World” is a biogeographic term referring broadly to Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Monstera, by contrast, is a New World genus, native to tropical regions of the Americas. “New World” refers to the Americas and associated regions encountered by Europeans during the Age of Exploration.

Although the two genera evolved similar climbing habits and fenestrated or divided foliage, Rhapidophora tetrasperma is botanically distinct from the Monsteras it superficially resembles.

Given a support to climb, warm temperatures, bright indirect light, and an airy aroid substrate, R. tetrasperma can grow rapidly and develop increasingly mature, dramatically divided leaves.
