Monstera sp. ‘Peru’

Commonly known as Monstera Peru, this distinctive climbing aroid is immediately recognizable by its thick, deeply textured foliage. Unlike the smooth leaves and dramatic fenestrations associated with many familiar Monsteras, Peru develops substantial, leathery leaves with a heavily puckered or bullate surface and beautiful dark-on-dark green coloration.

The unusual texture gives mature leaves an almost sculpted appearance, with raised areas between the veins catching the light differently across the surface. Its foliage remains relatively compact on the vine, making it an excellent choice for collectors who want an unusual Monstera without the enormous footprint of M. deliciosa.

The plant is frequently sold under the name Monstera karstenianum, although that name is taxonomically problematic and is not currently accepted for this plant. For that reason, we prefer the horticulturally familiar but botanically conservative designation Monstera sp. ‘Peru’.

This is a vigorous climber and will perform best when given a moss pole, plank or other vertical support. Warm temperatures, bright filtered light and an airy aroid substrate encourage larger, increasingly impressive foliage.
