This species was described by Dr. Croat in 1995 which marked the beginning of its recognition in the scientific community. It belongs to the section Pachyneurium, one of the several sections within the Anthurium genus, which is known for its members’ thick, leathery leaves and a preference for terrestrial or epiphytic growth habitats.

The name “cupulispathum” is derived from Latin, where “cupuli-” refers to a small cup and “-spathum” relates to the spathe, reflecting the unique characteristic of the inflorescence where the spathe forms a protective cup-like structure around the spadix. This morphological feature is not only distinctive but also serves as an adaptation to protect the reproductive parts from rain and potential pollinator interference in its dense rainforest environment.

This species is known to get quite large, with leaves over 5’ in length in its native habitat.
