Philodendron tortum

Philodendron tortum is one of the most distinctive species in the genus, immediately recognizable by its extraordinary, deeply divided foliage. Mature leaves develop numerous long, extremely narrow segments radiating from the midrib, creating an airy, almost skeletal appearance unlike that of the broad-leaved Philodendrons most commonly grown as houseplants.

This is a true botanical species rather than a cultivated hybrid. Native to the wet tropical forests of northern Brazil and Bolivia, P. tortum grows naturally as a root-climbing vine on the trunks of trees.

As the plant matures and establishes itself on a vertical support, its foliage becomes increasingly elaborate and architectural. Despite its exotic appearance, it is a rewarding aroid in cultivation when provided with warm temperatures, bright filtered light, good humidity, an airy substrate and something to climb.

Its unusual form makes Philodendron tortum an excellent choice for collectors looking beyond the more familiar velvet and heart-shaped aroids. Mature specimens have an unmistakably tropical, almost prehistoric appearance and add tremendous texture without the visual heaviness of broad foliage.
