Anthurium crystallinum — Velvet-Leaf Species (Grower’s Choice Seedling)

Anthurium crystallinum is the classic velvet-leaved species — one of the foundational species behind the modern popularity of velvet anthuriums. Native to Colombia and Panama, it develops broad, cordate leaves with a deep velvety texture and prominent pale-to-silvery venation that intensifies as the plant matures. Grower’s choice: you will receive the best available seedling from my bench.

Specialist care (sourced). Bright indirect light (east/northeast window or filtered south/west); 18–27°C, avoid below ~15°C and cold drafts (GrowTropicals; minimum 16°C). Humidity 60%+ — 70%+ strongly preferred; Bovees nursery notes leaf-edge browning and loss of velvet on new leaves below 60%. Water when the top inch of a chunky, airy mix (bark, perlite, coco coir, sphagnum; pH 5.5–6.5) dries; feed half-strength balanced fertilizer monthly in spring and summer. Habitat-derived (INFERRED): Kew’s Plants of the World Online records it from Colombia (Antioquia, Chocó, Risaralda, Tolima) at 500–1,000 m elevation as an epiphytic herb of rainforest understory — a warmth-loving, high-humidity plant that wants filtered canopy light and an organic, debris-rich root zone, consistent with the documented care above.
